Caliper (mm) 45MM WB
- Known for having the largest leaf of any native tree (can get up to 90 cm long), which is compound and consisting of many small leaflets - In Ontario, this tree is threatened by a change in habitat and land being cleared for agriculture - They are also poor seed producers, must have both male and female trees present - It gets its name from early settlers who may have roasted seeds as a coffee substitute (although many parts can be toxic to humans)

Most trees are sold by caliper size (mm), which measures the external diameter of the trunk, 6” up from the bottom of each tree in Aug-Sept.

Multi-stemmed shrubs and conifers that branch near the base are sold by height (cm) measured around the same time.

Plants are lifted out of the field and put into wirebaskets once weather permits and temperatures cool (in spring and fall) so trees are dormant for best results with transportation and planting.
