- A cool-season sedge that blooms in early spring (and sometimes again in fall), that naturally occurs in partial or shady and moist woodlands - Makes excellent groundcovers or accent in shady areas where most grasses do not grow. Plants form small colonies from small rhizomes - Foliage is bright green to chartreuse and semi-evergreen with narrow glossy blades with greenish or pale yellow spikelets in early spring followed by pendulous seedheads with long beaks - Member of the diverse sedge genus (Carex spp.) made up of hundreds of species all characterized by triangular edges - rather than round blades of tall grasses - and textured spikelets or spikes - Leaves provide food and shelter for local moths and insects while seeds are often eaten by birds and rodents
